Gynecological Oncology is the term used for the specialized field of medicine that focuses on Cancers of the female reproductive system. These can be classified as

  • Cervical Cancer
  • Ovarian Cancer
  • Uterine Cancer
  • Vaginal Cancer

Gynecologic Cancer

They are the most common type of cancer affecting 1 in 20 women.  They are caused by uncontrolled, abnormal cell growth in one or more of the female reproductive organs (cervix, uterus, ovaries, vagina, fallopian tube and vulva).

Causes of Gynecologic Cancer

Almost all cervical cancers and some cancers of vagina and vulva are caused by a virus. Some others are caused by genes that promote the growth of cancerous cells. The abnormal function of these genes is either acquired through smoking, environment influences, aging etc or is inherited.

Prevention of Gynecologic Cancer

Regular screening, self examinations, knowledge of family history can help in early detection. Diet, exercise and your lifestyle play an important role in preventing cancer.

Treatment of Gynecologic Cancer

Surgery, Radiation and / or Chemotherapy are the treatment options available. The choice of therapy is determined by the stage and type of cancer.
