A number of diagnostic tools are available to understand the cause of infertility. Initially, the fertility specialist might perform a physical examination along with evaluating the family and medical history of the couple. For women the testing involves a physical exam and a pelvic evaluation.
Laparoscopy allows doctors to examine the female reproductive organs (ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes). It is a common diagnostic and surgical procedure for infertility evaluation. The procedure in this case involves making two incisions (one at the pubic hairline and other at the navel). The laparoscope is inserted in one opening and surgical instruments are inserted in the other incision. The internal organs like the uterus, ovaries, tubes etc can be viewed using the laparoscope. Many conditions such as endometriosis can be treated using laparoscopy thus eliminating the need of a surgery. There is little pain associated and the recovery period is also very short. This is also a cost effective process.
